Super8 Films

Honest and nostalgic to the core…

Super 8 captures moments in such a sentimental and honest way. With this format there are no retakes, no do-overs, it films your moment just as it is — and once the film is developed, it retells your moment with warmth, grain and nostalgia.

Super8 film feels like a hazy memory or dream state, which can transport us to a time many days down the track, briefly gifting us the benefit of hind site — and allowing us to see just how precious, important and fleeting our lives and moments are.

Here’s all you will need to know if you’ve been considering adding Super8 to your family session or wedding day.

What is Super8?

Super8 is a motion picture film format that came to popularity in the 1960s and 70s for home movies — and just like those eras it has a vintage feel. It captures motion with a grainy texture, muted colours, and no sound. You can’t watch the footage back immediately and you can delete it and start again. In order to watch your Super8 film, the film cartridge is sent away to get developed by Kodak professionals who have access to the specific technologies required.

How does it work?

Super 8 isn’t about documenting every second. Instead, it works best when it captures the highlights. It’s for those who value real, heartfelt moments over a highly-edited production.

Each film cartridge will capture up to 3 minutes of film — so it is more about the quality of a few meaningful and honest moments, than a full day captured. For families, one roll works well and for wedding days I recommend at least 2 rolls of film.

Super8 can be unpredictable and imperfect, and it works best with good natural light — making it best suited for outdoor celebrations. If your day is dark or inside with low light we will have to use additional lighting.

Limitations of Super8

While Super 8 is beautiful and nostalgic, it’s not for everyone. Here are some of its key limitations to help you decide if it’s the right fit:

No Sound Recording / this means speeches, vows, or music aren’t recorded.

Short Recording Time / each roll of Super 8 film only lasts about three minutes, so filming is very intentional. This means it won’t capture every detail of your day, only the highlights.

Unpredictability / Super 8 is analog film, so you won’t know exactly how the footage turns out until it’s developed. Light leaks, grain, or other imperfections may appear. Personally, I find this all part of its charm.

Light Requirements / Super 8 relies heavily on natural light for the best results, making outdoor shoots during the day ideal. If your event is at night or in low light, additional lighting will be needed.

No Retakes / Super 8 doesn’t allow for instant playback or retakes. Once a moment is recorded, it’s locked in—mistakes or unexpected happenings will be part of the final product.

so… Why Super8?

If you are someone who embraces imperfection, nostalgia, and raw storytelling, Super 8 is truly one of a kind and there is no format that feels the same.

Super 8 is for the couple or family who wants to see their moments not just as they were but as they felt. It’s for those who love nostalgia, embrace imperfection, and want their memories to feel like a love letter to the past. If you’re ready to add a little Super 8 magic to your story, let’s make it happen. I can’t wait to bring your moments to life in the dreamiest, most nostalgic way.

Super8 FAQ

  • Each film cartridge holds up to 3 minutes of footage, so your Super8 film will be at least 2.30min — 3.00min.

    2 film cartridges = 5min-6.00min
    3 film cartridges = 8min-9.00min
    etc.

  • I focus on capturing the:

+ candid and intimate moments, the ones that feel most personal to you.

+ highlight moments — such as the first look, first kiss, walking down the aisle, wedding party fun, cutting the cake etc.

+ any moments that you have specified that you want captured (don’t worry I have a Q+A for you which helps you get clarity around this).

  • Once I have had the film developed I will send you over the Super8 via your Wedding Gallery Link (for viewing) and also via a Google Drive Link (for downloading).

  • Super8 cameras don’t record live sound, so no sound will come with the raw footage.

If you would like a song to be accompanied to your highlight film we can discuss a song that suits and this can be added to accompany your film.

  • Ultimately it depends on the processing time for the Film Lab, but I do try to get your memories to you as soon as possible. Please allow for a 6-8 week turn around time for highlight films.
